Ever thought of using crystals as a way to maintain a youthful, healthy glow? Perhaps you should! Rejuvenating your skin with the energy of crystals is not just the latest celeb fad – throughout history almost every system of holistic medicine has used crystals for healing purposes, including Ayurveda, Chinese, Hopi Native American, Greek, Roman and the Egyptians– Cleopatra bathed with chunks of Rose Quartz to harness its wonderfully healing and anti-ageing benefits – and of course massage therapists have been incorporating them into their practices for years.
Crystals have the amazing ability to influence and interact with our energy fields and for those of us who mindfully engage with these vibrations, crystals can act as a conduit for healing. When used in massage, crystals can help to release stuck energy in the meridians as well as draining the lymph nodes of accumulated toxins. As they push negative, disease causing energy out, they allow positive, healing energy to flow into the body.
Whether your preference is for Jade (symbol of longevity and grace, its usage is steeped in Chinese history) or Rose quartz (the stone of love and healing) each becomes a powerful tool, especially when used in a Gua sha (pronounced gwa sha) facial massage, to relieve tensions which often build up in the facial muscles making us appear – and feel – older.
Gua sha is traditionally performed on the body, a vigorous scraping technique using anything from an antler or horn in its early days, to a jade stone or a porcelain soup spoon; the friction caused from the repeated strokes results in scary-looking bruising and redness that can last for days after treatment. However, a gentler version of the Gua sha technique works beauty wonders when practised on the face.
As the skin is ‘scraped’, the layers of the skin are stimulated, muscle tension is relieved, blood circulation is boosted and stagnant lymph, that causes puffiness, is moved and cleared out of the system. The results? A a brighter, healthier, more radiant complexion.
Even if you don’t believe in the power of crystals, the feel of them as they glide across your skin is soothing to the nervous system and helps you drift off into a lovely state of relaxation.
